The President of the African American Heritage and Culture Center was welcomed into the home of Mrs. Barbara Lee to interview her about what it was like growing up in N
ew Bern and hearing her reflect on her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement in the New Bern community. She shares her experiences being trained in non-violent tactics by youth leaders Rev. Leon “Buckshot” Nixon and Rev. Willie Hickman. How they marched to A & W Root Beer, Clarks Drug store, and Kress Dept. store, singing freedom songs. When refused service, they sat on the ground outside. She was 16 years old when they were arrested and jailed in the basement of city hall. With the support of the community, she and others were able to attend the 1963 March on Washington. This moving interview offers a deeply personal perspective on resilience, faith, and love for the community and its people. Mrs. Lee’s strong desire to help people is still seen in her continued involvement with local youth, especially those facing challenges in school.
